My organisation

Global Disability Innovation Hub (GDI Hub) is an Academic Research and Practice Centre accelerating disability innovation for a more just world. Based at UCL (University College London) we are operational in 60 countries, with more than 70 partners. Since launching in 2016 we've reached more than 34 million people and are the World Health Organisations (WHO) first Global Collaborating Center on Assistive Technology. GDI Hub was launched in 2016 as a legacy of the London 2012 Paralympic Games and is based on Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, on University College London. We accelerate new solutions through innovative partnerships and multi-disciplinary thinking.​ The GDI Hub Disability Innovation Strategy 2025-2030 outlines our ambitions for the next five years. This strategy builds on our recent growth and accomplishments, setting the stage for the exciting work ahead.​

About me

Cathy is the Academic Director of Global Disability Innovation Hub (GDI Hub) and Interaction Design and innovation Professor at UCL’s Interactions Centre (UCLIC). Cathy contributed to the Global Report on Assistive Technology as an author via the Expert Advisory Panel and sits on the WHO Technical Advisory Group for Assistive Technology. Cathy has co-led GDI Hub to be the first WHO Collaborating Centre on Assistive Technology, with a project portfolio of over £60m across 41 countries, reaching over 28 million people globally. Within this, she has led innovation ecosystem development for assistive technology, including establishing Africa’s first assistive technology accelerator, developing an impact fund and supporting ventures to enter global markets. Cathy’s team at UCL also develops novel technologies for disabled people in the UK and globally. Cathy has published over 190 papers in assistive technology and accessibility alongside a recent book, Disability Interactions – Creating Inclusive Innovations. Cathy was recognised as a leader in disability in the Shawe Trust Disability 100 List 2023.
