My organisation

Blind Institute of Technology (BIT) stands as a global nonprofit staffing and recruiting agency exclusively dedicated to professionals with disabilities. By championing inclusivity in our offerings, we not only serve an underserved community but also contribute to building a more equitable and compassionate society. BIT helps to reduce barriers to inclusive employment through education, preparation, employment placement and accessible technology initiatives. In 2017, we launched the BIT Academy as part of our workforce development division. The Academy provides courses in Salesforce Administration and Digital Accessibility Analysis to disabled professionals. These valuable courses will ultimately prepare them for BIT’s Apprenticeship program, as well as set them on a path to a successful career in the industry of their choosing. BIT is the exclusive owner of two Registered Apprenticeship programs for the blind and visually impaired at the national level, both endorsed by the US Department of Labor. Taking a historic step in 2018, we took the BIT Academy to a new level by transforming it into a virtual classroom. This move not only expanded its reach globally but also secured its status as the only approved training provider for people with disabilities by Salesforce.

About me

Mike Hess, a tech veteran with 20 years of experience managing 7-figure projects for Fortune 500 companies, noticed a troubling trend – he was often the lone blind professional in the room. Recognizing the untapped potential of the blind and visually impaired community, he founded the Blind Institute of Technology (BIT). BIT aims to challenge stereotypes and promote inclusivity for disabled professionals in corporate America through advocacy, education, and innovative initiatives. Leveraging his IT expertise, Mike has fostered partnerships and placed disabled professionals in Fortune 500 companies nationwide.

To address the need for marketable tech skills among people with disabilities, Mike also established the BIT Academy. Through a partnership with Salesforce, the Academy offers specialized courses in Salesforce Administration and Digital Accessibility Analysis, empowering individuals with disabilities to compete effectively in the workforce. With a commitment to leveling the playing field, the BIT Academy is dedicated to equipping individuals with disabilities with high-level certifications for success. The BIT Academy is the only approved training provider for people with disabilities by Salesforce.
